Required Tests

There are three standardized tests required by the state education agency to become a certified teacher in the District of Columbia.

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators – must be passed prior to the Residency year. Praxis Core is offered in continuous testing windows.

Praxis II: Content Area Knowledge Test – must be passed prior to the Residency year; the last testing window for the 2016 cohort is May 2-14.

Praxis II: Principles of Learning & Teaching Test (specific to area of certification) – taken at the end of the residency year

Candidates assume responsibility for all testing fees. Successful completion of all three individual portions of the Praxis Core and Praxis II tests are required in order to begin teaching in a DC public school.
